West Nile Virus Alert

Dr. Lloyd Novick, Onondaga County Commissioner of Health, reported September 12, 2002 that two additional cases of West Nile Virus have been identified in Onondaga County residents.

The Onondaga County Health Department has identified the primary risk of infection as being from mosquitoes that breed in residential areas. Breeding sites include refuse and materials that collect water such as tires, old boats, discarded toys, clogged rain gutters, barrels, wheel barrows, tin cans, plastic containers and other items that can hold water if left outside.
As a result, the Health Department has requested that all Onondaga County municipal code enforcement offices detect these hazards and advise or order residents to correct these problems.

Anyone with questions about the West Nile Virus should contact the Health Department at
435-1649. Anyone with questions about disposing of tires or other debris should contact the Code Enforcement Office at 673-3269, extension 4. ~
